Horrified, the two girls run to the Sand Keeper,

“We beg of you, master, burn the devilish books, yes, but not the rest.”

They found a flood of arguments, imploring him to save the Gnostic library, to load a selection of the major volumes on the flying machine with which they were to escape. The wizard responded with sad gravity:

“I must be firm on this. You see the content of the Avasthic gnosis is not that simple. Transfer of knowledge depends from the giver and the receiver but we always forget how much of the transfer of knowledge depends upon the one who receives. A writing of the gnosis delivers its substance only if the receptivity of the reader stems from his or her advanced initiation in the Deep Way. Only when such is the case, the content of the pages unload in the mind of the reader as a direct and intuitive experience of recognition.

- It was amazing” commented the reminiscent Evenyl of her recent recovery. The healing hand of a mother from above was working through the Book of the Kavach and snatched me from the very jaws of hell. I beg of you, do not destroy such treasures.

- Alas” the Sand Keeper went on, “trained Avasthas and well endowed readers have now disappeared from the surface of the earth; these books are useless, worse, they are dangerous. At best, people getting hold of them will forge mental constructs about things they do not really grasp nor experience.

- Don’t humans realize they can only learn by experience?” Asked Esitel doubtfully;

“Is it so that the next cycle, the next race will have to test and try all over again? It seems absurd to me.” Added Lidholon.

“ It would be more absurd to feed them a food they cannot digest. What is the use of putting the knowledge of reality in little packages of thoughts where it shall dissolve? Do you want, down the alleys of time, to meet only the proud guardians of empty boxes? The humans are likely to twist and distort the meaning of the discourses, including the teachings of the Daskalians or the words of the Aulyas. At worse the magic powers of the Gnostic books would be misused and manipulated. No, I cannot risk this.

- Master, will there be a way to regain this treasure?” Evenyl interjected with a sense of disbelief: “I cannot bear the thought that the Gnostic library of the Rock Avasthas will go up in smoke. We have achieved all this incomparable knowledge at the end of our cycle and to what avail?”

- The dominion of the demons shall be short lived. The next cycle belongs to man. Mind my words: the human mind is restless, a twister of truth. I fear what human beings might do if they get hold of sacred books. What was a message of love shall end up to legitimate hate. Believe me; we must destroy the work of the Avasthas even though we do so with a heavy heart.” Their heart indeed felt like stones but this was it: visibly the wizard did not wish to further explain the matter.
